Town hall, Jungfernstieg (Virgins Lane Street) and Alster Lake
The town hall - built in 1897 - mirrors the proudness and self-confidence of the Hamburg people. The older building was destroyed during the great fire of 1842. The town hall is 113 m wide, 112 m high and rests on 4,000 wooden poles rammed in the underground. Close to the town hall there is the newly-arranged "Jungfernstieg" with the Alster quay. The white fleet of Alster boats invites for several trips on the Alster lake and through the canal network.
